Call if someone's life is in immediate danger — including your own. This includes active suicidal intent with means, unconsciousness, or a psychiatric emergency. An ambulance will be sent. You do not need to explain everything clearly.
Go to your nearest A&E if you need urgent face-to-face mental health assessment that cannot wait. Tell the reception team you are in a mental health crisis. You can ask for the mental health liaison team on arrival.
Call 111 and press 2 to reach your local NHS Mental Health Crisis line. A trained mental health professional will answer. They can provide immediate support, refer you to crisis services, and arrange urgent assessments. No GP referral needed.
Samaritans offer confidential, non-judgemental support for anyone struggling to cope. You do not need to be suicidal to call. You can talk about anything. They listen without pressure. Also available via email at jo@samaritans.org
If you cannot talk out loud, text SHOUT to 85258. A trained crisis volunteer will text back within minutes. Completely confidential. Useful if you are in a situation where speaking is not possible.
CALM runs a free, confidential helpline and webchat for anyone in the UK who is struggling or in crisis. Open every day of the year. Also has specific support resources for men, though open to everyone.
Mind provides information and support on all aspects of mental health — conditions, treatments, rights, and where to get help locally. Also offers a legal advice line and online resources.
Papyrus supports young people under 35 who are experiencing thoughts of suicide, and those concerned about someone at risk. Available 24/7 by phone, text, or email. Trained advisors only — not automated.
SANEline offers specialist emotional support and information for people affected by mental illness, including family members and carers. Staffed by trained volunteers with lived experience of mental health challenges.
Rethink provides advice and information to people living with severe mental illness, and those who support them. Specialist advisors can help with benefits, housing, employment, and navigating NHS services.
Free, confidential support for children and young people up to age 19 on any issue. Calls will not appear on your phone bill. Also offers online chat with a counsellor at childline.org.uk.
